H in E’s Teacher Tidbit – 2

PHYSICAL AGILITY

The first impression is a very powerful one. Along with clothing, we have to have a good bearing and physical agility.  How we walk and carry ourselves matters a lot.

Holding the back straight and walking erect are keys to communicate briskness. It is a psychological signal that we are in good health.

The teacher’s briskness adds to the impression that is created. If we want to teach the younger generation to be hardworking, then we must teach them how by staying energised and active during the time that we spend time with them.

Tips that will help you with walking erect and staying brisk:

(a) Wear comfortable footwear. If possible at your school, stay barefoot which is a most natural energiser.

(b) Spend at least 20 minutes a day with exercises. You can check the videos on this blog to learn some very simple exercises which you can easily do along with your students in class.

(c) Avoid lifting very large piles of books at one go.

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

The first impression is a very powerful one.

The most important tip to take care of yourself is to wear clothes that make you look neat and dignified.

school teacherYou must look comfortable and confident in the clothes you wear.

Nepalese_schoolStudents readily borrow the confidence from the teachers. Tidy looking clothes, hair and accessories are added advantages to gain a more confident look.

All of you can have a fun activity where you write down what looks best on each of your colleagues. You will also get the suggestions from all your peers. You can then see what most of them think.

FIFTH TRAIT OF GREAT TEACHERS

The Fifth AND MOST IMPORTANT Trait displayed by Great Teachers is INTEGRITY. What constitutes integrated individuals? Why is integrity so important for a teacher?

Suggested Activity:

Make a personal diary and keep noting down the things that make you feel less integrated as a person.

This can include things like, “I must have openly reasoned with my HoD today instead of staying quiet and accepting everything.”

FOURTH TRAIT OF GREAT TEACHERS

The Fourth Trait which is extremely important for Great Teachers is EFFICIENCY. While we all know what it means, some of us find it difficult to manage all the work within the time-frame we are provided with. Now, we shall see the ways in which we can become more and more efficient.

Suggested Activity:

Make a list of the things that you can eliminate or reduce from your routines. Share the list and see if there are common points among your team-members.

Next make notes on how to simplify some of the things you do and how you can function better as a team.

THIRD TRAITS OF GREAT TEACHERS

The Third Trait displayed by Great Teachers is RESPONSIBILITY & OWNERSHIP. What really is responsibility? Does it mean the set of activities that we are expected to fulfill as part of our job? What must we step forward to own?

Suggested Activity:

On a slip of paper write down what are the areas where you can claim responsibility (which you have NOT yet done) and what initiative you are going to take towards fulfilling them. Share with your peers.

SECOND TRAIT OF GREAT TEACHERS

The Second Trait displayed by Great Teachers is PREPARATION.

What all does preparation involve? How can we be well prepared for our sessions?

Suggested Activity:

In a very short time, plan on a novel and fun way to bring up a topic which you consider is very theoretical. While you do this, keep this in mind – Students might know the concept and will require you to only teach the nomenclature (the specific terms/names which are used).

E.g., While teaching genders to a class Lower Primary students you can make up a story along with the students that has all kinds of characters (nurse, horse, tiger, policeman, mother, brother, cub, king, princess, beggar, etc.) which you note down or draw on the board. Then segregate these into Common, Neuter, Masculine and Feminine genders.

FIRST TRAIT OF GREAT TEACHERS

The First Trait possessed by Great Teachers is GOOD APPEARANCE. What does this mean? How can we work upon our appearance?

Suggested activities:

  1. Circulate a sheet of paper with the teacher’s name written on it. All the colleagues can share their opinion on what kind of clothing makes the teacher look the best.
  2. Come up with a short rhyme to tell about the importance of being neat and organised which you can teach the students. (This can be talked in conjunction with Swachh Bharat).
  3. Have a wall decorating day (there should be no work with books on this day) when students can be invited to paint the walls using stencils or some simple motifs and make the school bright and attractive.
